Two moves, and the defender gets a say. Each puzzle here has a single winning first move; the board then plays the defender's toughest reply, and you finish the mate. Every defence has been tried to the end, so if the position says mate in two, it is.
These are the positions that teach calculation rather than recognition. The first move is often quiet: a chariot that takes an escape square away, a soldier that steps into the palace, a cannon that finds its screen. The mate only appears once you have asked what the General does next.
A wrong move only lets you retry. The board plays the defender's best reply in the longer puzzles.
