River patrol chariot
巡河车 · xún hé chē
A chariot placed on the rank just in front of the river, where it defends its own soldiers and watches the crossing points.
Patrolling the river is the quiet, flexible way to use a chariot in the opening. It supports your own soldiers, stops enemy pieces from crossing comfortably, and keeps the option of swinging to either wing.
It is the natural counterpart to the chariot that crosses the river and attacks. One plan is aggressive and committed, the other is patient and keeps the position under control.
It is also a defensive post. A chariot on that rank guards your own crossing points, so an enemy soldier or horse trying to come over has to do it under fire, which frequently means it does not come at all.
In practice
If you do not have a target yet, patrol rather than cross. The chariot stays useful and your opponent still has to respect it.
